The substance which we eat every day, containing various edible components that provide us energy and materials that help our body to grow and remain healthy are called food.

Function of Food

1.It provides energy to do work and other activities.

2.It helps in the growth of our body.

3.It helps in healing injuries and protects our body from diseases..

4.It keep our body warm.

Sources of Food


Carrot, Radish, Turnip, Bee-root, Sweet potato.

Potato, Colocasia, Ginger, Turmaric.

Lettuce, Salad, Cabbage, Spinach, Fenugreek, Onion, Garlic.

Cauliflower, Banana, Rose Brocoli, Bauhinia.

Lack Fibres and Vita-C.

Rich in Proteins and Vitamins.

Honey bees (apis) collect  nectar from flowers and convert it into honey.

1. Autotrophs :- Green plants produce their own food hence, they are called producers/autotrophs.

2. Heterotrophs :- organism derive their nutrition from other sources.

3. Nutrients :- substances from food which provide material for growth and life activities.

4. Scavangers :- animals that consume dead and decaying food from surroundings.

Example- Vultures, Crows, Sparrows, Birds, Ants.


Oils and fats form an important part of a healthy diet. Structurally they are esters of glycerol with three fatty acids.

Type of oils-

1.Edible oil- the oil which one can used eatables are called edible oil.

2.Non edible oil-which is not used in eatables.
